World In Conflict

If you like things a bit more realistic then World In Conflict is one to get.
The game is set in 1989 and you start just as World War 3 is breaks out and has tons of cultural references of the time as well.
World In Conflict eschews the traditional resource collecting and base management and allows air drops and an epic amount of indirect fire options from airstrikes to massive artillery barrages.
The game also has a unique style in that you get to play both sides which drives the story and it culminates in an epic finale as you drive the Soviets out of the US and Western Europe.
The pace of the action, the graphics and the Tom Clancy styled story will keep you busy for quite a few long nights.
It’s available on GOG.com as the complete edition so comes DRM free and keep an eye out for it to be on offer for even more value but even so at under a tenner its still worth grabbing.
Civilization

For those that like to take things at a slower pace, Civilization is the game for you.
The epoch scaling game pits you as a leader from history as you take your people from nomadic subsistence farmers to the modern masters of the world.
The game has so many ways to play and while combat is unavoidable you can avoid as much of it as possible with diplomacy as you expand your borders and research everything from writing to Stealth Bombers.
With so many ways to play and so much to manage this game can go on and on for as long as you want it to.
The game also comes with scenarios and challenges and whole load of expansions to keep things fresh and exciting.
The latest version of Civ is out now but for great value and compelling game play Civ 5 is the one to get which you can do so on Steam however whichever one you play expect the hours and days to fly by as it’s so engrossing and is one of the best strategy games series out there.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

The last truly great Tiberium based Command & Conquer game in our humble opinion.
This was epic when it first came out in 2007 and is still awesome today with a great story line featuring a epic cast of Hollywood actors and those from popular series of the time (BattleStar Galactica and Lost) it has everything you need to while away those cold winter nights.
The futuristic setting and the atmospheric music just add to the awesomeness of this game as GDI and the Brotherhood of NOD battle it out for control of what’s left of earth after Tiberium, the crystal you collect to build things goes into overdrive and has made most of the planet uninhabitable.
Once done install Kane’s Wrath and carry on the fight and try out the Global Conquest mode too for added longevity.
Both of which are available on EA’s Origin platform and whilst you can play skirmishes you can’t add new maps which is a travesty. Why EA WHY!!!
If you can get hold of a hard copy do so as a whole world of mods and multiplayer maps awaits you including the epic fan made expansion Command & Conquer 3: The Forgotten.
You’ll get to see the story from a completely new perspective and use tons of new and unique units as the Tiberium saturated mutants.
