The Best Arcade Racing and Driving Games Ever

Scud Race

No, you weren’t racing around on Soviet era mobile missiles, in fact you had a choice between a Ferrari F40, McClaren F1, Porsche 911 Turbo and the super torquey Dodge Viper in Sega’s 1996 arcade classic.

Each car has different characteristics and take skills to master (with the Porsche being the easiest to start with).

The courses on Scud Race though are what set it apart, they’re bonkers, from racing through an airport to hurtling and drifting around the grounds of a castle its brilliant fun.

Why there was never a home version released we’ll never know (probably something to do with the car licensing) and because it was never released at home its quite likely that you’ll never see and be able to play this again soon as the old machines go to their grave.

If you do spot Scud Race, play it to death with up to three other mates if you can.

GTI Club

A good arcade racing games job is to mix simulation with freedom and a bit of fantasy and what can be more epic and dream like than careening around the sunny Cote D’Azure in (mostly) classic European GTI’s.

GTI Club does just this and you have a choice of classic cars from Mini’s to Renault 5 Turbo’s where you hoon it round courses which have tons of shortcuts which if you spot you use your handbrake to help turn into.

GTI Club is great fun to play and looks really retro.

You know the drill. If you find it somewhere play it like you own it.

OutRun 2

OutRun 2 has got to be one of the best arcade driving games ever made. Period!

It took everything that made the 1986 original so good, added drifting and this was had the Ferrari license giving players the chance to drive their dream cars including the 288 GTO, Testarossa, Daytona, F40 and even the Enzo Ferrari.

All to a remixed version of the original soundtrack and some seriously beautiful locations to zip around whilst beating the clock to the elusive finish line.

Luckily we also got a home release which came with even more on the original Xbox and the Playstation 2 and the PSP which are all very faithful conversions of the arcade original but for sheer thrills and fun if you see it in the arcades strap in and have an awesome time!
