Perfect 10: Tunes That Defined The Second Summer Of Love

This year marks 32 years since 1988 and the Second Summer of Love also known as the year that Acid House took over the UK. Whilst House music is know an everyday thing, back then it was a revolution and the disenfranchised and downtrodden youth of Britain lapped it up. These new sounds that were coming from Chicago, Detroit, New York and Ibiza were out of this world and went on to shape the very fabric of dance culture around the world. There are hundreds of tunes that defined that era, some of them were brand new in 1988 and many were much earlier. Most of the anthems we all know, they’ve been remixed and repackaged so many times it feels like they’ve always been here. There were tunes that maybe aren’t remembered quite so well but that still had a huge impact on the scene. So let us take you on a nostalgia trip through some of those anthems as well as some of the more obscure oddities that defined the Second Summer of Love. Jungle Brothers – I’ll House You Hip Hop had a big influence in the early days and the Jungle Brothers had the foresight to fuse these new House sounds to create this dancefloor smasher. Hip-House would go on to be its own genre in the following years and would dominate the charts for a good while. T-Coy – Carino Carino is a tune that perfectly sums up the Balearic influence with its Latin-infused piano and bassline. It might be a fairly simple track but it has summertime written all over it and it rocked The Hacienda back in the day. Ce Ce Rogers – Someday Huge anthem alert! If you know your dance music then you already know this track, or at least a few other tracks that have sampled it. Someday is a huge Disco tinged House tune with a stunning Vocal that embodies the spirit of House music. It is a tune of hope and togetherness that still shines today. A Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Ray Some records are truly timeless and Voodoo Ray is one of them. When it first arrived on the scene it sounded like the aliens had landed and to be fair it still does. One of the few tunes at the time to be produced in England it is rightfully remembered as one of the all-time greats. Richie Havens – Going Back To My Roots You should all know this one but might not recognise it in this form. Going Back To My Roots is the perfect example of one of the older Disco records that influenced the sound. Originally released in 1980 it would be a regular track at the Hacienda as well as the raves of the time. It was famously reworked in 1991 by FPI Project as Rich In Paradise (Going Back to My Roots). Brandon Cooke feat: Roxanne Shante – Sharp As A Knife (Acid Attack) Aciiiiiiid. Yes! Now the Scene wouldn’t be complete without a heavy Acid workout and this track fused the unmistakable rapping of Roxanne Shante with a stomping Acid groove. This is the sound of a 303 and it sent crowds wild. Fallout – The Morning After (Sunrise Mix) The Morning After is one of those tunes that seems as though it was made for the sunrise. It’s blissed-out synths and soft acid bassline took audiences to a higher state. It was also produced by two dance music legends, Tommy Musto and Lenny Dee. Rhythim Is Rhythim – Strings of Life Little did Derrick May know, when he wrote Strings of Life, that he had created a whole new genre. Techno came straight out of Detroit and would go on to be House music’s intelligent and darker sibling. The piano is off-kilter and almost Jazzy while the stabs and bass created an urgent rhythm that forced you to pay attention. Quite possibly one of the most important pieces of modern music ever written. Raze – Break 4 Love There are few House tunes that can touch the beauty of Break 4 Love. This track has one of the greatest vocals of all time and the somewhat erotic noises that pepper the track cemented it into House music legend. It also has a great example of a classic Jackin’ bassline, something that helped to move House music away from its Disco roots. Mr Fingers – Can You Feel It? (Vocal Mix) If you think of the Second Summer of Love then this is probably the tune that instantly springs to mind. Mr Fingers a.k.a Larry Heard wrote a tune that summed up the spirit on House music when he made 'Can You Feel It?' The original was released in 1986 and didn’t have the speech which was taken from My House by Rhythm Control.
