Perfect 10: Scooter Instrumentals That Rocked The Dancefloor

Scooter are a much-maligned group. Often hated by the underground and made fun of by the commercial scene they cut a controversial figure in the world of dance music. A large part of that ridicule comes from their front man MC HP and his often ridiculous, yet thoroughly entertaining lyrics. Now don’t get us wrong, we love Scooter here at Retroheadz HQ and MC HP is an absolute legend. Yet for some completely unknown reason he often just recites lyrics from old classics or shouts about “Dave from Sheffield” or “How Much Is The Fish?” But he’s a great front man none the less. Allow us to change your minds. What a lot of the haters may not realise is that behind all this they have written some absolutely awesome tunes that deserve to be heard. Many of them should have been classics on the underground rave scene and were it not for the name attached to them, they would have been. With this in mind let RTetroheadz take you on a trip to discover the best Scooter tracks that don’t feature MC HP and prove that they are far more than the novelty act you might think of Scooter as. Note. Whilst some of these do have vocals they are sampled as opposed to being performed live. Beautiful Vibes Taken from 1995’s …and the beat goes on! Beautiful Vibes is a classic Hardcore roller. Excellent breakbeats, a fantastic piano and a chipmunk vocal that has 1995 written all over it. How this wasn’t caned at the raves is beyond us. Chinese Whispers As Scooter’s career progressed so did their influences. Chinese Whispers is a Hard Trance workout that would smash most dancefloors apart. It’s stunning ethnic vocal and tough as nails kick make it an instant classic. This was on Scooter's 2001 album We Bring the Noise! Unity Without Words Pt:2 Unity Without Words Pt:2 was the B-Side to their massive 1995 single Back in the UK and is essentially a stripped back remix. Gone are the cheesy Miss Marple sample and MC HP’s vocals, leaving behind a stomping Hardcore track with an epic piano line. Absolutely massive. Experience This is a seriously atmospheric tune that straddles the line between early German Hard Trance and Hardcore. It’s dark and uplifting with an awesome synth line and some great breakbeats to match and one hell of a breakdown. One of the standout tracks from 1996’s Our Happy Hardcore Album. Awakening Scooter released two albums in 1996 and Awakening is taken from the second of those entitled Wicked! This is an all-out Freeform stomper and was years ahead of its time. Believe us when we tell you that this is one of the best intro tunes for a freeform set you could ever use, if only people would have given it a chance. Different Reality If you’re going to introduce yourselves to the world as a dance act then this is the way to do it. The opening track from their 1995 debut album …and the beat goes on! It is a floaty trance tune with tinges of Hardcore influence. A genuinely beautiful piece of music that sets up the album perfectly. Forever (Keep me Running) Taken from the 1997 album Age of Love, Forever (Keep me Running) is full of Ibiza spirit. Trance was growing massively at the time and this had the potential to be an Ibiza Trance classic. The Balearic influence is clear, from the acoustic guitar to the Trance synths and vocal, it’s a hands in the air celebration of summer. Raving in Mexico Technically MC HP does appear on this track but only on the intro so we’ll let it slide. Once the beat kicks in this is an all-out Happy Hardcore classic complete with ethereal synths and a heavy bass. This one just stomps along relentlessly and once the acid line kicks in you’re hooked. Coldwater Canyon Another track from 1996’s Wicked! Album. Coldwater is a dream of epic synths and rolling bass. A genuine trance monster complete with a chillout infused breakdown that will have you reaching for the skies whilst hugging your raving buddies before it erupts in a flurry of high energy stabs and pianos. Epic! Rhapsody in E There is no doubt in our minds which tune should be number one on this list. Rhapsody in E is taken from …and the beat goes on! This was also a B-Side on the 1994 Hyper Hyper single. If Scooter had released this as the A-side things could have been very different for them. Not just one of their best tunes but we would go out on a limb and say one of the best Dance music tracks of all time. There really isn’t anything else like this and it’s hard to categorise. Beautiful synths, high energy rhythm, squelching Acid and stunning pianos. It just builds and builds into something unique with a huge swell of nostalgia.
