NEC PC Engine
1987 saw the launch of NEC’s PC Engine in Japan.
The console ran on an 8 Bit processor but you would have thought it was more than this as it also had a 16 Bit Graphics chip and really upped the ante.
The PC Engine basically kick started the 16 Bit generation of consoles like the Megadrive, Super Nintendo and Neo Geo.
NEC’s PC Engine did really well in Japan between 1987 and 1994.
It was the first console to have a CD-Rom add on and it had games officially coming out all the way up to 1999.
That’s an epic run that was much better than its successor, the PC FX which was meant to supersede it in 1994.
It was also popular in France and saw a limited release in the UK under the US versions name, the TurboGrafx 16.
