10 Classic After Club Mind Melters That Will Blow Your Mind!

You know when you've been out clubbing for three days solid, you've fallen into the repeating pattern of: pub, club, after-party, pub, club, after-party, pub, club, e.t.c, and then somewhere around when the walls start to melt you hear that utterly ludicrous tune, completely at odds with all the other tracks around it but really, really catchy, and then you can't quite remember it when you're trying to tell your mate about it the next day? Ever had that? Yeah, us too. Maybe it was one of these... Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco This little gem came on the scene in the early '90's, hot on the heels of Acid House. I feel it's safe to say that the makers were no stranger to the blotter, microdot or mushroom, and quite possibly all three at once. Fish - Mr Scruff Another psychedelic voyage, this time into the depths of the sea. Hauntingly damp and lovingly crafted, its lounge lizard jazz melody and what seems to be sound bites from a public information film make it the best kind of absurd, one of my all-time favorites. It'll get in your head and stay there. Page One - Lemon Jelly A long one this, but eminently worth it. With its lazy piano melody and muted break-beat counterpoint, it should really be played as chill out vibes or on a hot Summer's day when you're in the garden. I used to have a meditation tape called 'How to stop thinking' which would vegetablise you within half an hour. This is like that. We'll be right back - Steinski and Mass Media Going right back to the mid-eighties with this track, it harks back to the original Chicago House sound and is almost entirely composed of sound bites cut from 1950's era American adverts over a very basic high-hat driven beat. Yes, it is every bit as stupid as that sounds, but somehow still great fun. Chum Drum Bedrum - Vitas Where to start with this? The bloke singing is apparently a well respected Russian composer, opera producer and singer, but here he looks like he's eaten every experimental drug ever developed by the K.G.B and is cruising comfortably in the upper stratosphere. I first heard this on a stag do in Brighton in the mid-noughties and I couldn't get the damn thing out of my head for three months. It is a powerful mind-worm. You have been warned. I Fink U Freeky - Die Antwoord This is Zef music from South Africa, heavy bass, synth overlay, filthy lyrics delivered in pigeon English. It's an acquired taste, but when it bites it's like aural crack. Die Antwoord means 'The Answer' in Africaans, though I really don't want to know what the question is if that's the answer you're going to get. Paranoimia - The Art of Noise with Max Headroom Max Headroom was a dysfunctional artificial intelligence contained in a T.V, made from the severely concussed brain of a stunned reporter. This tune reflects that idea perfectly. It's an absolute mess of '80's tropes, with squelchy, electronic burps and an inexplicable rock guitar chorus. An answer to the question; 'Do androids dream of electric sheep?' (though not necessarily the right answer) according to this, they dream of proper respect for their star status, coffee makers and poetry. Come To Daddy (Little Lord Faulteroy Mix) - Aphex Twin Although the Aphex Twin is a very weird individual who most assuredly makes eerie and unsettling music, this particular track, for me at least, takes the proverbial trophy. The hook is horrible, the white noise and static intro is horrible, as is the background whispering as delivered by a possessed child. Once heard, though, it clings to you like the stench of fear when woken from a nightmare, drenched in sweat at three in the morning. Frontier Psychiatrist - The Avalanches A beautiful blending of (I think) psychology primers, adverts and sound bites from '40's and '50's American T.V, which are cut and mixed and backed by a full orchestra. It is majestic and very, very surreal in equal measure. Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat - Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr Ft. Beardyman This shouldn't work at all. In any way, shape or form. somehow, though, it transpires to be the very best track I've ever heard. I mean, yes, Fatboy Slim has a knack for making stuff that no-one else would even attempt totally work, but on the face of it, this has no redeeming features whatsoever. It's essentially just a monologue of some hippy chemical head recounting his evening's adventures, and yet when given 'the full-fat boy' treatment it becomes a layered, motive, bass heavy, rolling juggernaut of funk.
