Perfect 10: Eurodance – The Ultimate Sound of The 90s

Eurodance was absolutely huge in the early to mid-90’s and epitomised the inclusive and celebratory feeling that the youth across Europe and even as far afield as Latin America and Canada had, after all the wall had come down only a few years before and it was time to party, together. Eurodance's legacy is one that shows that boundaries could be broken down by the medium of pacey, melodic music with positive raps and epic female vocal choruses about love and freedom all naturally accompanied by Pop sounding drums and that classic Eurodance rolling bassline. What more could you want? This was the music you heard on holiday or at school discos, roller discos and nightclubs or was on was blaring out of the speakers on the Waltzers at the local travelling fair in mid-summer everywhere across the UK and will stay with you forever as they captured that moment in your life. From big acts like 2 Unlimited to obscure one hit wonders, Eurodance is a wonderfully fun yet often misunderstood moment in 90’s history that can trace it routes back to Italian Disco and Hi-NRG and borrowed elements from rave and Techno music and a veritable smorgasbord of other musical genres including Reggae and Hip Hop. Right, so, let’s begin the nostalgia for those that love this genre and for some of you the beginning of your Eurodance journey! Here’s 10 classics to get your started! Mo-Do - Einz Zwei Polizei You might not have heard of this song unless you were watching MTV European top 20 in 1993 then you would know this humongous Euro hit from Mo-Do. Einz Zwei Polizei was number one for donkeys years, it’s insanely catchy and the lyrics are so euro it’s epic. The legacy of this song means that it’s been remixed across so many genres from House to Frenchcore, this song means a lot to so many people across Europe and beyond to be fair. The follow up hit Super Gut is equally brilliant in my opinion. Culture Beat – Got To Get It This was a pretty big hit in the UK as well as the rest of Europe back in 1993. Culture Beat had a string of hits in the early to mid-90’s and they also had hits with Anything, Inside Out and of course…Mr Vain. Ice Mc – It’s a Rainy Day Eh Ey! Some Eurodance songs dispensed with the happy, happy joy, joy and went a bit, well, melancholy but so what! Ice MC's It's a Rainy Day was a huge hit with its epic organ sounds and reggae rapping and one of the catchiest choruses ever made! Corona – Baby, Baby Corona was massive in the 90's, the singer from Brazil had a string of hit including the timeless Rhythm of the Night and Try Me Out. However, for pure party energy you can’t go wrong with Baby, Baby which came out in 1995. It has everything you need in a Euro track, the rolling bassline, catchy lyrics and that cheeky little riff and of course, everyone loves a piano breakdown as well! N-Trance – Set You Free (Amsterdam Remix) N-Trance smashed the charts with the breakbeat version that everyone knows, however it’s the Euro mix that may just blow you away with its fantastic riff and that trademark Eurodance bassline underlaying the classic lyrics. Sing it loud! Motiv8 – Rocking For Myself How much energy is in this track? Tons! If you ever needed a song to give you a lift on a blue day or some motivation down the gym then here it is. The way the chorus kicks in just lifts things up a notch every single time. Dr Alban – Let The Beat Go On Dr Alban scored a huge hit with It’s My Life back in ’92 which is a great track but there’s tons more energy in their follow up hit. Its brilliant! SNAP! – Welcome To Tomorrow SNAP!’s Welcome To Tomorrow is still an amazing track 20+ years later. Mellow and moving with purpose at the same time with great lyrics and as typical of the era a CGI filled music video that we reckon was done with a video toaster on the Amiga of all things. If you totally forgot about this track then add it to your playlists and check out their other hits from this period such as Eternity, Exterminate!, and the Georgio Moroder/Donna Summer influenced 'Do You See The Light'. Maxx – Get A Way This song was everywhere back in the day, you couldn’t escape it, not that we wanted to to. If you were a teenager when this came out or a bit older and clubbing then this was a dancefloor and fairground ride filler. Captain Hollywood Project – Flying High What a track! Captain Hollywood Project’s Flying High is so uplifting and positive and so, so catchy and has all the staple Eurodance elements in it, the rapping, uplifting chorus, rolling bassline and catchy riffs.
