Virtua Racing
Sega’s first polygon-based racer looks totally retro with its chunky flat shaded polygons from the Model 1 arcade board chugging along nicely giving players an epic thrill ride in a Formula One car.
With three tracks and four different viewpoints to choose from, Virtua Racing to arcade racing to another level and literally blew people away when it first came out in 1991 and rightly so.
If you do get a chance to play it in a timewarp arcade somewhere, hope it’s the deluxe version where you are sitting in replica F1 cars and can challenge up to four mates for the top spot.
Luckily Virtua Racing has been released on most Sega console with the Megadrive version being the only game to use Sega’s Virtua Signal Processor which was a rival to Nintendo’s super FX chip made famous by Starwing and others. It had a great version on the 32X, Saturn and special mention goes to the PS2 version on Sega Ages Vol. 1 which you can pick up quite cheaply.
On top of this a remastered HD version is coming out on the Nintendo Switch and looks stunning.
Sega Rally
Sega Rally is without a doubt an amazing arcade racing game to play.
It’s all about the drifting and perfecting them through the tight corners in this arcade classic from 1993 whether that’s on dirt or tarmac it feels great and is great too.
The game has two cars to choose from, the Lancia Delta Integrale and the Toyota Celica with the Lancia being a smaller car helped you get through those bends a little bit easier.
One thing to mention is the navigator, if you hear ‘Easy Left, Maybe’ it really isn’t an easy left!
If you do see one about put a couple of quid in to it and have a retro blast you won’t regret it and special mention has to go to the Sega Saturn version which is pretty faithful to its arcade big brother which you can pick up for not a lot today.
